One of the first beginner photography blog posts I read when I got my camera had this very simple tip:
Keep your camera with you all the time.
It’s a mantra that shows up consistently. I haven’t been the best at living up to this maxim—I still find it awkward at times to have my digital camera with me during casual social situations. But I do always have my phone with me, and I’ve been getting better at recognizing opportunities for good photographs on the fly.
Such a thing happened yesterday while I was playing basketball with friends at an old court in St. Paul. As the sun was getting low, I pulled out my phone and took a single shot. I’m pretty happy with how it turned out.
It doesn’t hurt that I have such photogenic friends.
I’m working on getting more comfortable with my camera being an extension of me. For now, this will do.
